Govt to launch Ola, Uber-like ‘Sahkar’ taxi service: All you need to know
The Union government has announced the launch of “Sahkar Taxi,” a cooperative-based transport service aimed at providing bike, cab, and auto rides. The initiative is set to offer a direct earning model for drivers, eliminating the need to share profits with large corporations like Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah introduced the plan in Parliament, emphasizing that the project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation). He highlighted that the Ministry of Cooperation has been working tirelessly over the past three and a half years to bring this concept to life.
Sahkar Taxi concept: How will it work
The Sahkar Taxi service will register two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler cabs across the country. Unlike private ride-hailing companies, this government-backed initiative ensures that drivers retain their full earnings, offering them better financial security. “The profits from this service will not go to big industrialists but will directly benefit the drivers,” Shah said.
The rollout of Sahkar Taxi is expected to take place in the coming months. Additionally, Shah revealed plans to establish a cooperative insurance company, which will provide financial protection to those in the cooperative sector.
For drivers, it means better earnings without commission cuts, giving them more financial security and independence. Many cab and auto drivers have long complained about high commission fees from private platforms, and this initiative could provide them with a fairer alternative. For customers, the new service could lead to competitive pricing and more reliable rides, especially if the government ensures better regulations and service quality.
