Jadavpur University alumni in Mumbai to hold event marking Salil Chowdhury’s birth centenary | India News
The Mumbai Chapter of the Alumni Association, NCE Bengal and Jadavpur University will host a cultural programme on May 10, 2025, to mark the 100th birth anniversary of composer and poet Salil Chowdhury. The event, titled Prithibir Gaadi Ta Thamao, will be held at the Maratha Sahitya Mandir Auditorium in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.
The programme will include narration, live performances, songs, poems, visuals, and archived video interviews with Chowdhury’s family and collaborators. Over 20 performers have been rehearsing for the past 10 weeks under the banner of Jadavpur Alumni, Mumbai. The event will feature songs in Bengali, Hindi, and Malayalam.
The title is taken from Chowdhury’s Bengali song “Prithibir Gaadi Ta Thamao”, which calls for a pause in the pace of the world to reflect on social inequality. Chowdhury’s body of work spans Indian classical, folk, and Western musical influences.
Dibyendu Chakraborty, former president of the alumni association, said the programme is intended as a reflection on Chowdhury’s work and its continuing relevance.
