Schools closed in border states amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions: Check list here

Amid rising geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, several state governments have announced the temporary closure of schools and colleges in border regions to ensure the safety of students and staff. The move comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a strategic military action undertaken by India in response to Pahalgam terror attack. With the situation becoming increasingly sensitive, authorities in states like Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Rajasthan have suspended in-person classes in vulnerable districts. The closures are expected to continue until security conditions improve, with regular assessments being conducted to determine when normal academic activities can safely resume.

States Affected by School Closures

Parents, students, and educational staff are being urged to follow official advisories and remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The states where schools have been closed include:Punjab: All educational institutions (Public and Private) in Punjab will remain closed on May 9 and 10, 2025, as announced by the Government of Punjab School Education Department.Jammu and Kashmir: All educational institutions in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have been shut till Saturday. “All schools, colleges and universities in Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed for two days on Friday and Saturday,” Education Minister Sakina Itoo said on Thursday.Haryana: Educational institutions in Panchkula district will remain closed till Saturday, as announced by Haryana Home Secretary Sumita Misra via X (formerly Twitter).Rajasthan: The Rajasthan government has revoked the leave of administrative and police personnel stationed near the International Border and ordered the closure of schools in five border districts: Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Barmer.

Reason for School Closures

The closures come in the wake of India’s military operation, “Operation Sindoor,” which targeted suspected militant camps across the border. The operation has led to increased security measures in border areas, prompting state governments to close schools as a precautionary measure.

Government’s Response

The authorities have assured the public that the closures are temporary and are being implemented to ensure the safety of students and staff. The government is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates regarding the reopening of schools once the security situation stabilizes. While the closure of schools may cause temporary disruption, the safety and well-being of students remain the top priority.
