Iron ore output soars 15% for NMDC in April, pellet production sets new record

State-run mining major NMDC has recorded a 15 per cent increase in iron ore production and a 3 per cent rise in sales for the month of April. In a statement issued on Sunday, the company said it produced 4 million tonnes (MnT) of iron ore during April, up from 3.48 MnT in the same month last year.
Sales for April stood at 3.63 MnT, compared to 3.53 MnT in April 2024, reflecting a growth of 3 per cent.
Commenting on the performance, NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee said, “Our record-breaking April performance, coupled with best-ever despatch figures from our major iron ore mines — Kirandul, Bacheli, and Donimalai — with a growth of 12 per cent, 4 per cent and 88 per cent, respectively over CPLY solidifies our leadership position and sets a strong foundation for achieving our ambitious target of becoming 100 MT mining company by 2030.
The company also reported its highest-ever April pellet production at 0.23 lakh tonnes, surpassing the previous record set in 2018.
NMDC, which functions under the Ministry of Mines, remains India’s largest producer of iron ore.
Meanwhile, NMDC Steel Limited (NSL), the demerged steel arm of NMDC, registered an 8.5 per cent month-on-month increase in hot metal output, producing 2,30,111 tonnes in April as against 2,11,978 tonnes in March.
NSL operates the 3-million tonne Nagar Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, established at a cost of Rs 24,000 crore. It is considered the youngest steel plant in India.
